A typical eye-witness, Hans Egede, a Norwegian missionary, wrote
in 1734 of "a sea monster which raised its head so high .... that its
head reached our maintop ... long sharp snout ... blew like a whale,
had broad large flippers ... covered with a hard skin ...
it was formed like a snake."
