    Description

OFFERED HERE IS THIS VERY INTERESTING AND MASSIVE JAPANESE SAMURAI SWORD. THE SWORD IS A BEAST HAVING A 29 1?8 CUTTING EDGE AND MEASURING 1 3/8" WIDE AT THE MACHI, 13/16" AT THE YOKOTE AND 5/16" THINK AT THE MUNEMACHI. THE TANG MEASURES APPROX. 10 1/4" AND EACH HORIMONO MEASURES APPROX. 9" LONG. THE FULL MOUNTED LENGTH IS 41". THE SWORD IS NOT IN POLISH, IT APPEARS THAT IT HAD A "CLEANING" PERHAPS WITH STEEL WOOL OR SOMETHING, NO DAMAGE RESULTING, JUST TOUGH TO MAKE OUT THE HADA AND HAMON CLEARLY. THE HAMON IS VISIBLE JUST VERY FAINT. THERE IS A TINY FLAKE TO THE CUTTING EDGE JUST SHORT OF THE YOKOTE. THE SHIRASAYA IS LOADED WITH KANJI, SOME IS FAINT SO TOUGH TO GET A GOOD BEAD ON IT, HOWEVER THERE IS A DATE OF 1918 AND A REFERENCE TO A TEMPLE AS WELL. THE SWORD IS SIGNED "KOYO JU ? ? ? MINOMOTO MASATERU KITAU KORE". HE IS LISTED IN HAWLEY'S AS MAS-973 & TK-566. TO THE OTHER SIDE IT IS SIGNED, "SOYO-JU DOI NOBUYOSHI NO KONOME NI YOTTE TSUKURU, MEIJI MI NINEN HACHIGATSU HI TETSU KABUTO, BO O UTSU KORE O KITAERU". TRANSLATED: "MADE ACCORDING TO THE LIKING OF DOI YOSHINOBU, RESIDENT OF SAGAMI PROVINCE, ON A DAY IN THE EIGHTH MONTH OF MEIJI TWO (1869), YEAR OF THE SNAKE, AND TESTED ON AN IRON HELMET AND ROD AFTER FORGING".
