    Description

For your consideration is this early wakizashi blade in WW2 era fittings. The signature on the tang translates to “Echizen no Kami Fujiwara Kunitsugu”, or, “Fujiwara Kunitsugu of Echizen Province”. A rather well-regarded swordsmith, he was active from the 1650’s-1680’s, which means this blade is roughly 350 years old, give or take a couple decades. Despite heavy pitting/chipping towards the tip, the blade is brightly polished and shows clear hamon as well as the little imperfections in the steel characteristic of older Japanese swords. WW2 fittings are not in great shape, the little safety clasp button is missing a piece and the wood around where the dowel that attaches the grip to the blade goes is missing a large piece, but these WW2 era grip components are everywhere so it won’t be difficult to replace it should you choose to.
