Description
Horseshoe crabs are marine and brackish water arthropods of the family Limulidae.Their popular name is a misnomer, for they are not true crabs. Given their origin 450 million years ago, horseshoe crabs are considered living fossils.
The entire body of the horseshoe crab is protected by a hard carapace.
They have a sword-like tail and several sets of eyes which are a million times more sensitive to light at night than during the day.
They are carnivorous creatures feeding on worms, molluscs, sometimes crustaceans or even small fish when searching on ocean ground.
This listing is for an authentic, once living Atlantic Ocean "Horseshoe crab". The shells that I offer are all deceased animals that have died of natural causes after being stranding or beached from storms. I gut them and dry them in a natural position. The shells dry with a natural shine, except in areas where algae or barnacles attached. There are many pointed prominences that may be missing or loosened. This naturally occurs as the animal is moved by storm action up and into the surf, and eventually onto the beach.
Please look at the photographs included of the actual animal shell that you will receive, as these are considered part of the description. The tail may naturally have wear on the bottom distal end, which happens as the animal washes in on the surf and the abrasive sands. The tail attachment ligament is a delicate one that once dried out, because extremely fragile. I affix it from the underside with model airplane glue which is thoroughly dried before being packed and sent to you. It is not uncommon for this point to break and it will be packed with ample bubble wrap to prevent this from occurring.
PLEASE NOTE: there is a small cut to the exterior front of the shell, which has a small 3/16" triangular hole in the shell missing. PLEASE see the last couple of photos to see this cut (it occurred prior to death of the animal). My finger is pointing it out for you to see.
There are naturally occurring defects and shell growths that may appear as scuffs in the shell or scrapes. This is part of the natural exposure to the currents and other ocean creatures.
I will gladly combine multiple items purchased from my listings, provided that you place the items in your cart PRIOR to selecting the payment option. You must first request an invoice be sent and at that time ONLY can the shipping be recalculated and reduced.
